Program Note

Take the Love, This Can’t Be the A Train (2011) for Clarinet in B flat and piano:

This piece owes its entire existence to the well-known jazz standards, This Can’t Be Love and Take the A Train. Due to a happy happenstance, both of these tunes are in AABA form, and, furthermore, both tunes have exactly 17 notes in BOTH their A sections and their B sections. This coincidence allowed for extensive experimentation using recombinant musical-DNA techniques. That is to say, the rhythm of one tune fit very nicely onto the melody of the other and vice-versa. The result is certainly not “The A Train”, but it might be the “Quatrain”.

Since June of 2010, I have arranged this piece for several different instrumental combinations including: horn quartet, bassoon quartet, clarinet quartet, a trio for oboe, bassoon and piano, and alto saxophone and piano. This clarinet and piano version was written for my daughter, Charlotte Hope Kies.
